Increase your senior pets quality of life

MollyMolly's real life story...

Molly was doing things she had never done before- defaecating in the house, dropping little bits of faeces around the place, not coming inside, unable to get up in the mornings, and generally not her usual self. Molly’s owner thought she may have dementia and her time may have come! Sarah at Summer Street Vet Clinic, suggested that Molly had a senior wellness check.

On examination , it was found she was really sore in her hips and had very reduced range of motion in both back legs. She did not want to come up the stairs and struggled to get in the car. Radiographs were recommended, and they showed she had severe arthritis in both hips. Also blood and urine tests were performed , to check she would be Ok to use some of the medications required and to assess her general health.

Degenerative joint disease (DJD) /arthritis is very common in older dogs especially Labradors. The signs can be very subtle , and most owners do not notice they are in pain. Molly was showing all the signs of being in pain: unable to get outside to go to the toilet, having difficulty climbing, unable to squat, being most sore in the mornings (hence staying in her bed), reluctant to run or play , andfalling behind on walks.

The treatment recommended included medication , changes in bedding , a winter coat, warmth, and some changes to access to the house.

Molly was treated with a course of Pentosan injections which help assist the body’s own repair mechanisms to heal the damage to the joints caused by arthritis.

Also there was additional pain relief with anti inflammatories , a new coat , change of bedding, improved diet to Eukanuba Senior diet which included omega 3 fatty acids which help decrease inflammation.

Molly is now so much happier and all the original problems have resolved now she is pain free!

Molly will have regular health checks every 3 months as part of her senior wellness program (and a booster of her pentosan injection). This will enable the vet to monitor her progress and to ensure she has the quality of life she deserves.

Book now for your pet’s senior health assessment and make the most of their senior years!!
